I would like to start this off by saying that one of my goals for the future is to travel the world to explore new places and gain meaning from those places. As of now though, I have only made connections to a few places.
A place that has a lot of meaning and importance to me is my friend Christian's house. He lives in Ka'a'awa, on the east side of Oahu. I call his house my happy place for a few reasons. From his garage to the beach is about a 30 second walk. I love surfing, and nothing beats the convenience of being that close to the waves. I also love his home because his backyard is Ka'a'awa valley. My friends and I have spent many hours back their, riding bikes, driving his golf cart, moo-ing at all the cows, running away from said cows, climbing trees, and visiting old movie sets that have been left behind.
I think that the components that establish a sense of place are both in the physical place itself, as well as the memories and connections that are made there. For example, I have a deep sense of place at this home because I love the ocean and the valley. I could play here all day and not get bored. I also have a deep sense of place here because of all the good times that I have shared with all of my friends. From surfing together all day until one of my friends passed out from dehydration, to getting the golf car stuck in the valley and walking a few miles back to the house, to making smores outside under the stars. That is why this place is meaningful to me.
